Why iPhone photos are HEIC files

Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos in HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) by default. HEIC files are about half the size of an equivalent JPG at the same quality, which saves storage on your phone. The catch: Windows, older Android phones, many websites, and most upload forms don't accept them. Converting to JPG makes the photo work everywhere.

Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?

JPG is a lossy format, so there is a small technical loss, but at 90% quality it is invisible. You can raise the quality slider to 100% for the closest match.

Open Settings → Camera → Formats and select Most Compatible. New photos will be saved as JPG; existing HEIC photos still need converting.

Can I convert HEIC to PNG?
